What to Look For When Buying a Bonsai Tree
Not all bonsai trees are created equal, especially the ones at garden centres or online marketplaces. Here’s what we cover in the video:
✅ Healthy Leaves
Start with the foliage. Look for bright green leaves with no dry edges or yellowing. Drooping or brittle leaves? That’s a red flag.
✅ Strong Nebari (Root Flare)
Check that the roots flare out naturally at the base. A hidden or narrow root system might indicate poor health or weak growth.
✅ Wiggle Test
Gently rock the trunk, it should feel firm and secure. A wobbly bonsai may not be rooted properly, which often means it’s been recently potted or is struggling below the surface.
⚠️ Avoid Glued Rocks & Black Roots
If the soil surface is glued together with pebbles, walk away. It’s a common trick to mask poor health. Also, check for signs of rot, pests, or blackened roots.
